They may often be used by, and in many cases, coined by other experts and academics working in the new business growth and innovation strategy domain. We started maintaining a collection of them here for the convenience of our clients.
Metrics that inform the development or adjustment of a new, unproven strategy hypothesis with an emphasis on discovery, learning, and hypothesis testing.
Metrics that inform the optimization of ongoing business operations and performance in accordance with a strategy that has already been proven and the business is mature.
A team of empowered representatives from key functional organizations charted with helping "explore" ventures and businesses selectively leverage key assets and competencies of those functions when the "explore" processes and priorities are not well aligned with those that the functions have optimized for the "core" business.
A conscious decision to transition a business concept or venture from one Stage in the Pipeline to the next, if it has met the entry criteria and provide it with increased resources. Outcomes of a Gate decision could be to move forward (to next Stage and invest), shut-down, or pivot (redefine the hypothesis and go back to start of current or previous Stage).
